With the help of Youtube and the internet, it’s tempting to DIY a variety of projects. While you may be able to accomplish a small repair on a home appliance or learn how to crochet, some projects will require the expertise of a professional. Before attempting your own concrete project, here are a few things to keep in mind…
- Purchasing the right amount: Concrete is messy business. It takes time to pull out all your tools, supplies, set aside the time and get back from the hardware store. The last thing you’ll want to do is run back to the store for more concrete. Or maybe worse, buying too much and wasting your money.
- Having the right tools: Working with concrete requires a variety of tools, big and small. The more tools and supplies you have, the quicker and easier the job. However this can be a significant investment that you might not want to make for 1-2 projects.
- Purchasing the right kind of concrete: There are many different types of concrete on the market today, and each is specially formulated for different applications. Before purchasing whatever-is-on-sale, make sure you’ve researched to find the correct type so you don’t end up wasting precious time and money.
- Mixing it correctly: Concrete that is mixed incorrectly, with too much or too little water, can present a large number of issues down the road. After choosing the right type and buying the right amount, make sure to research proper mixing techniques.
- Using old concrete: Did you know concrete can be persishable? Using concrete that is too old (or not the right type, or not mixed correctly, or poured incorrectly…) can lead to your project falling apart, deteriorating, cracking or large lumps.
- Improper use of reinforcing fibers or techniques: With varying weather conditions, it’s important to consider the benefits of reinforcing fibers. Otherwise, you might experience cracks and crumbling with your finished project. Research the proper application of these additions.
Okay, this might seem like a lot. And, it is! Maybe we’re biased, but we recommend contacting a pro. In the long run, it will certainly save you time, and probably money too!
